What part of copyright don’t you understand?
No this isn’t about MP3s or movies, that’s a completely different can of worms.
This is about pictures and those fucking kiosks in every damn store.
I work in a place that has a kiosk where you can scan and print your own photos.
Every now and then I see copyrighted works being scanned or printed. So I politely inform the customer I cannot sell/print the item because it’s covered under copyright.
Many question what that means, and I don’t blame them, for the most part. Many don’t know that when you have a photo taken the photographer is the copyright owner and you have no rights to the image outside your standard uses.
So I explain this and sometimes even show them the “DO NOT REPRODUCE” or “COPYRIGHTED WORKS” you’ll usually see on the back of the photo.
But when they spit stupid shit out like “Well I BOUGHT the photo!” or “I scanned it at home!” I wanna bitch slap them out the door. Not because of the stupid comment, but because of the attitude.
I also get several people trying to copy things like calendars, newspaper articles, and other media. These people have NO leg to stand on and should just quietly submit.
Unless the photographer explicitly signs over the copyright or gives you a written release, SHUT THE FUCK UP.
Yes it’s a lovely shot, did you shoot it? No? THEN KNOCK IT OFF. I have over 100 things BETTER I could be doing than tell you over and over: NO!
